Performance and Visual Feasts Take Centre Stage at the Iconic Lowry in Manchester
Set alongside the picturesque setting in the heart of Manchester’s Salford Quays lies what has long been considered the city’s own incarnation of London’s West End. An architectural icon by any measure, the Lowry’s open ramped layout and design together with gallery spaces and theatre foyers that culminate to form a public boulevard are some of the most frequented sites in all of Manchester. Built at a cost of £120 million by famed architects Buro Happold and Michael Wilford this monumental space for visual and performance arts first opened its doors to the public in October 2000 by none other than Queen Elizabeth II.
Described as a breathtaking combination of glass and stainless steel the Lowry houses two theatres with their own ambience, galleries and promenade. The Lyric theatre is especially significant as it is believed to contain the largest stage in all of England outside of London’s West End. The interior space of the Lowry is similar to that of five football pitches and it houses an impressive 2000m² gallery displaying nearly 350 paintings by its namesake the famed artist L.S. Lowry. With truly monumental spaces devoted to performance arts, the Lowry regularly plays host to touring theatre shows, musicals, ballets, operas, dance recitals, children’s shows and comedy acts as well as a range of musical offerings ranging from jazz to folk bands.
Having hosted the Opera North series of operas, theatrical offerings that are set to take centre stage at the Lowry include The Not So Fatal Death of Grandpa Fredo, Room on the Broom, Morecambe, Hidden Glory – Dorothy Hodgkin in Her Own Words and the M.R James Trilogy. Comedienne Jenny Eclair is also set to perform at the venue that will also see the likes of Brian Adams and Kate Rusby gracing its auditoriums. A hotbed of activity for contemporary visual arts fanatics, other intriguing exhibits such as Mister Sixties Philip Townsend’s Portraits of a Decade collection and the Unlocking Salford Quays: The Inside Story among many others are also currently on display at the venue.
Visitors can also purchase something other than the paintings as mugs, books, homeware, stationery and clothing are also available. Children’s games, DVD’s, prints, limited editions and jewellery are also on offer at the Lowry which also houses its own signature restaurant, several cafes and bars.
Visitors on the lookout for Manchester hotel accommodation within close range of the airport will find no finer establishment than the stylish Copthorne Hotel Manchester. Ideally situated opposite the Metrolink tram stop this cosy Manchester hotel is also within close proximity of the city’s central railway station.

Icons of African American Literature: The Black Literary World $109.07 African American literature has a long and fascinating history. This book examines 24 of the most recognizable and popular topics related to African American literature. Each piece is substantial enough to provide more information than a typical encyclopedia entry but not so long as to be tedious or overwhelming. Arranged alphabetically, the entries cover such writers as Maya Angelou, James Baldwin, and August Wilson; major works, such as "Invisible Man," "Native Son," and "Their Eyes Were Watching God"; and a range of cultural topics, including the black arts movement, the Harlem Renaissance, and the jazz aesthetic. Entries are written by expert contributors and discuss the enduring significance of these topics in American history and popular culture. Each entry provides sidebars of interesting information and suggestions for further reading, while the set closes with a selected, general bibliography of print and electronic resources for student research. |
